 Obituary

This community was shocked and saddened by the news on Monday of Bertie Ferrin’s death, which occurred at St. Joseph’s Hospital Sunday night, as a result of an accident in which he was horribly burned Sunday about noon.  The funeral was held in the church on Tuesday, Rev. W. E. Rossman, of Washougal, officiating.  A large crowd was present, the school children all attending with the teachers.  There were many beautiful flowers.  The bereaved family have the heart-felt sympathy of a large circle of friends in their great sorrow.

Post Record (Camas, Washougal, WA)                  November 1915

 Found in the Columbian:

Powder proved a fatal toy for eleven year old Bertie Ferrin, who died last evening at St. Joseph’s Hospital after being seriously burned.  The accident occurred at the home of the child’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Ferrin at Fern Prairie.  In company with other children playing in the barn the powder had been unearthed and Bertie had filled his pockets with the same.  Later the explosive caught fire and the child was enveloped in flames.  He was hurried to the Vancouver hospital.  Aside from being badly burned he inhaled much smoke.

The body will be held at Knapp’s Funeral Parlors until tomorrow morning.  Services will occur at the Fern Prairie Church at 11 a.m.  Interment will be made in the family plot in the Fern Prairie Cemetery.
