Charles E. Gates of Fern Prairie Died Oct. 31, 1987 in Portland at age 78.
Mr. Gates was born May 27, 1909 in Sedgwick, Colo., and had lived in Camas 37 years. He lived in Camas from 1932 to 1942 and served in the military until 1960. After he retired from his post as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to Camas to stay.
Mr. Gates was active in the Fern Prairie Grange, community politics and served on the board of directors for the Fern Prairie Cemetery. He was sexton of the Camas Cemetery for many years, and at the time of his death was sexton of the Fern Prairie Cemetery.
He was survived by his son, Daniel Gates; his niece, Jennie Hanke of Portland; his nephews, Frank Jefferson of Fruitland, Allen Jefferson of Marysville, John Connolly of Seattle, and Pat Connolly of Alaska; his five grand-nieces and six grand-nephews, plus numerous nieces and nephews in Germany.
Burial was at Fern Prairie Cemetery. Arrangements were cared for by Brown’s Funeral Home.
