ObituaryLewis Walter Gates
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 17, at the Stoller
Memorial Chapel for Lewis Gates, who died May 14th at home. The Rev. George Jefferson officiated, Mrs.
Anna Metson was soloist with Mrs. Lucille Harlin at the organ.
Mr. Gates was born May 2, 1882, at Leon, Idaho. He had lived in the Camas area since
1929. He was a grange member for 38
years, serving as Master of Fern Prairie Grange for 7 years. Instrumental in organizing the Fern Prairie
Cemetery Association, he served as secretary for the past six years.
Mr. Gates served as Republican committeeman for the
Woodburn precinct until two years ago when he resigned due to failing health.
He is survived by his wife Effie, at home, a son, Charles
E. Gates of Camas, and three daughters; Mrs. Vona Connolly, Portland, Mrs. Lila
Jefferson, Camas, and Miss Elma Gates at home. He also leaves a brother, Hal Gates of Merino, Colo., and seven grandchildren.
Cremation was at Portland Memorial.
