FERN PRAIRIE MAN DIED LAST MONDAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Camas, July 30 –(Special)- Mr. W. S. Hall died at his home in Fern Prairie early Monday morning.  He has been suffering from a stroke or apoplexy for much time.

His funeral was held Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the family home, Rev. Rossman of the M.E. church officiating.  Interment in Fern Prairie cemetery.

FERN PRAIRIE MAN WAS VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR

W. S. Hall, a member of Orchards G. A. R. camp, Lew Wallace, who died in Fern Prairie Monday, was a veteran of the Civil war, where he served in the 183rd Pennsylvania infantry for three years, being honorably discharged at the close of the war.

Mr. Hall was born in 1842 in Maryland, but in his early childhood moved with his parents to Georgia, where he lived until the war.  Soon after the war he was married, living for a time in Pennsylvania, and later moving to Wisconsin where his wife died.  Later he married again, moving soon after to the coast.  This was in 1883,  and from that time until his death he had lived in Fern Prairie on the farm on which he made his home, and on which he died.

He is survived by his wife, Alice M. Hall, and by four children, Lewis Hall, of Fisher; Mrs. Mathilda Hall Rule, of Edmons; William E. Hall, of Fern Prairie, and Mrs. Maud Silv???? Of Newport, Oregon.

William S. Hall Family

William S. Hall was born in Georgia on January 23, 1842.  He fought in the Civil war.  He married a lady named Matilda in Georgia.  This was shown on the 1870 census.  I don’t know if Matilda Hayes died or they divorced but the 1880 census finds the family in Wisconsin.  He was married to Alice May Rossman at that time.  On 5/10/1890 he was issued a title transfer on a land grant. On the 1900 census, William was indeed in Fern Prairie, Clarke, WA.  This census shows William Hall, Alice Hall, spouse; William Hall, child; Maud Hall, child.

So, sometime between 1880 and 1890 the family moved to Clark County, Washington.

In 1880 William was listed as head of household on the census.  Alice Hall was listed as spouse.  Children listed were Elizabeth Hall, age 15; Louis Hall, age 13; Minnie Hall, age 11; Cora Hall, age 9; William Hall, age 4; Melvina Hall, age2.  Although Joseph Hall was not mentioned on the 1880 census, information we have say he was born in 1871.  In 1889 Emogene Hall was born.  The 1900 census shows Maud Hall but does not list her age.  I assume she was born after Emogene and probably was about one year old.  It appears all the children were either married or maybe died by 1900.
