Gary Dale Johnson, formerly of the Camas-Washougal area, died May 17, 2003, at home in Charleston, S.C.  He was 61.

Johnson was born Feb. 25, 1942, in San Diego, Calif., to Glee and Hazel Johnson.  His family lived in the Camas-Washougal area between 1957 and 1980, during which time his father, Glee, was a barber at the One Stop Shopping Center.

Johnson attended Clark College in Vancouver before joining the Coast Guard in 1962.  In his 30s, he moved to Scotland, where he lived and worked as a carpenter for 12 years.  During that time, he developed a state-of-the-art water filtration system that was installed there as well as in Italy and Russia.  After returning from Scotland, he lived in the Berkshires in Massachusetts where he was employed in various school as a woodworking instructor.  Johnson moved to Charleston three years ago to be a construction supervisor for Habitat for Humanity.  He was known as an adventurer with a giving nature, who would lend a helping hand wherever needed.

Johnson is survived by two brothers, Jim Johnson and Mike Johnson, and one sister Patti Cross.

A graveside interment will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m. at the Fern Prairie Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mission Fund, at the Circular Congregational Church, Meeting Street, Charleston, S.C.
