D. Johnson
Gary
Dale Johnson, formerly of the Camas-Washougal area, died May 17, 2003, at home
in Charleston, S.C. He was 61.
Johnson
was born Feb. 25, 1942, in San Diego, Calif., to Glee and Hazel
Johnson. His family lived in the
Camas-Washougal area between 1957 and 1980, during which time his father, Glee,
was a barber at the One Stop Shopping
Center.
Johnson
attended Clark College in Vancouver before joining the Coast Guard in 1962. In his 30s, he moved to Scotland,
where he lived and worked as a carpenter for 12 years. During that time, he developed a
state-of-the-art water filtration system that was installed there as well as in Italy and Russia. After returning from Scotland, he lived in the Berkshires in Massachusetts where he
was employed in various school as a woodworking instructor. Johnson moved to Charleston three years ago to be a construction
supervisor for Habitat for Humanity. He
was known as an adventurer with a giving nature, who would lend a helping hand
wherever needed.
Johnson
is survived by two brothers, Jim Johnson and Mike Johnson, and one sister Patti
Cross.
A
graveside interment will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m. at the Fern Prairie Cemetery.
In
lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mission Fund, at the
Circular Congregational Church, Meeting Street, Charleston, S.C.
