Bachelor Farmer is Found Dead Beside Machine

Charles F. Jones

Charles F. Jones, 75, bachelor farmer and resident of the Washougal district for the past 50 years, was found dead Thursday beside a mowing machine an estimated two days after a heart attack claimed his life, according to a report from the coroner’s office.

Jones was last seen Tuesday afternoon, August 24, mowing on the old Sandman farm.  Two days later a neighbor noticed that his horses were still in the field near the mower, one with harness partly gone, and upon investigation found the body and notified the sheriff’s office.

Further investigation by officials revealed that one of the horses had been unhitched from the mowing machine, while the other had not.  It is supposed that Jones was unhitching his team Tuesday evening at the end of his day’s work when he suffered the fatal heart attack.

Born in Missouri in 1868, Jones, came to the Washougal district 50 Years ago, and has farmed in this area since then.  He had no relatives in this area but is survived by a niece Mrs. F. T. Wall, of Woodland.

Interment was made in Fern Prairie cemetery, Swank’s Funeral home being in charge of arrangements.
